RIS Certificate Program

CSUDH Radiology Certificate - ProgramThe Graduate Certificate in Radiologic and Imaging Sciences allows professional interested in obtaining additional skill sets in therapy administration, radiologic sciences education, sonography, radiation therapy, CT, PET/CT, and MRI but who do not desire a graduate degree.

The Graduate Certificate is both a free-standing certificate to meet the current shortage as well as an alternate entry route into the Masters of Science in Radiologic and Imaging Sciences (RIS) where certificate holders may then continue on to complete a MS-RIS degree.

What You Will Learn

Upon successful completion of the Certificate, a student will be able to:

  • Critically read and comprehend scientific literature in RIS as it relates to management or education.
  • Describe in detail the current knowledge and theories about RIS management or RIS education.
  • Express graduate level professional ideas orally.
  • Demonstrate the ability to integrate graduate-level theoretical, analytical, research and practical skills into professional practice.

Admission Requirements

  • Hold a Bachelor’s degree from an accredited university.

  • Be certified/registered in at least ONE of the Radiologic and Imaging Sciences. Specifically:
    • Radiography (RTR)
    • Radiation Therapy (RTT)
    • Nuclear Medicine (RTN or CNMT)
    • Sonography (RDMS)
    • Magnetic Resonance Imaging (ARMRIT)
    • Cardiovascular Interventional Technology (RCES, RCIS)
    • Dosimetrist (CMD)
  • Submit proof of your certification/registration in one of the RIS disciplines as part of your application to CalStateApply.

Certificate Requirements

Certificate requirement is to successfully complete the 12 units in the certificate curriculum. This includes one or more practica.

RIS Faculty Profiles

Elwin Tilson, Faculty Dr. Elwin Tilson | etilson@ngskmc-eis.net

Dr. Tilson holds a doctoral degree from the University of Georgia and is a Registered Radiographer specializing in Computed Tomography applications, population effects of CT radiation doses, and technology in education. He has been a university professor for 41 years and served as Program Director, Graduate Coordinator, Chair, and Dean, as well as developed one of the first online degrees in the Radiologic and Imaging Sciences (RIS) and one of the first Master’s Degree in RIS. Dr. Tilson is a past president of the Association of Educators in Imaging and Radiologic Sciences (AEIRS) and has published 74 articles, 1 textbook, 1 national board review book, 1 computer program as well as over 75 peer-reviewed professional presentations nationally and internationally.

Gary Sayed, MS-RIS Faculty Dr. Gary Sayed | gsayed@ngskmc-eis.net

Dr. Sayed is a Professor of Radiological and Imaging Science. He previously served as dean of Health, Human Service and Nursing at CSUDH. His past academic experience includes serving as an Associate Professor and (later) Clinical Professor of Diagnostic Imaging at Thomas Jefferson University, Professor of Radiology and Biomedical Science at the Charles Drew University of Medicine and Science and Professor of Radiology at Alfaisal University College of Medicine. He also served on several academic leadership roles as Chairman of Diagnostic Imaging Department at Thomas Jefferson University, Dean of Health and Science at Drew University and Provost of the University of the Sciences in Philadelphia. He earned his first doctoral degree at the Medical College of Ohio at Toledo in radiological sciences and holds a second doctorate from the University of Pennsylvania in higher education management.

RIS Certificate FAQs

What does a certificate do for me professionally?

The certificate is designed for individuals who currently hold a master's degree and wish to upgrade their skills in a particular area such as RIS management, individuals who do not plan on finishing a master's degree but only want to upgrade their skills, and individuals who believe they may want to complete the master's degree but would like to take one or two courses in the program before committing.

What are the admission criteria for the graduate certificate?

Hold a Bachelor’s degree from an accredited university and be certified/registered in one of the radiologic and imaging sciences. Specifically, Radiography (RTR), Radiation Therapy (RTT), Nuclear Medicine (RTN or CNMT), Sonography (RDMS, RSCS, or RVT), Magnetic Resonance Imaging (ARMRIT), Cardiovascular Interventional Technology (RCES, RCIS), Medical Dosimetry (CMD), or PACS administrator (ABII, PARCA).

How many semester units/hour credits are required for the certificate?

The graduate certificate requires 12 units/semester hours.

If I do the certificate first, can those credits/units be applied towards the master’s degree?

Yes, all of the units that are part of the certificate can be applied towards the Master of Science in Radiologic and Imaging Sciences degree.
